Bunions, also known as hallux valgus, are a common bone deformity that causes pain and discomfort in the big toe.
Many people believe that this condition is caused solely by genetics, but the truth is that external factors, such as wearing inappropriate footwear and high heels, for example, play a crucial role in the development and progression of bunions, pressing the big toe outwards and deforming the bone.

Why isn't surgery always the answer?
Although surgery is often presented as the best solution for bunions, the truth is that it should only be considered as a last resort, in severe cases that do not respond to other treatments.
Among the reasons for not having surgery, we have separated 3 main reasons:
- Attack the root cause
Surgery corrects the bone deformity, but it does not eliminate the root cause of bunions, which usually lie in inappropriate habits, such as frequent use of shoes with pointed toes and high heels. It is like treating only the symptom and not the disease. If you start wearing inappropriate shoes again, the problem may reappear.
- Unnecessary risks
Bunion surgery, like any medical procedure, involves risks that must be carefully considered. Infection, bleeding, post-operative pain, and prolonged recovery time are just some of the pitfalls a patient may face.
- Effective alternatives already exist
Fortunately, conservative measures, such as wearing barefoot shoes and physical therapy, can be highly effective in treating bunions.
Barefoot shoes mimic the sensation of being barefoot, providing several benefits such as strengthening the muscles in the feet, improving proprioception (the ability to recognize the spatial location of the body) and reducing pressure on the big toe.
Additionally, techniques such as massage, electrostimulation and taping can relieve pain, improve range of motion and strengthen foot muscles.
